The character of LSD
Psychedelics, with their distinct effects and ‘personalities’, offer a spectrum of pathways for introspection and self-discovery.
My journey with LSD, spanning over a decade, has been one of continuous learning and reevaluation. It began with an initial fascination, shifted towards a preference for other substances, and has now come full circle, leading me back to a renewed appreciation for LSD, especially at lower doses.
Initial experiences #
LSD’s stimulating nature and the lengthy duration of its effects are immediately apparent. This often poses a challenge, especially regarding its potential to disrupt sleep. As a result, I confine my use of LSD to daytime, a precaution to mitigate its long-lasting impact.
This stimulation, which I attribute to dopamine agonism, also lends LSD its powerful problem-solving capabilities. While psilocybin offers a more relaxing and dream-like state, it sometimes leads to a less structured and more wandering mental journey. Conversely, LSD helps maintain focus on the intricate connections unveiled during the psychedelic experience. However, the intensity of this stimulation initially led me to favour other psychedelics, which seemed more manageable and less overwhelming in comparison.
Rediscovery #
More recently, my perspective on LSD has shifted.
I revisited this substance after a six-month hiatus from caffeine, which likely altered my sensitivity to stimulants. Combined with taking a relatively small dose, I found the stimulation to be more manageable. Remarkably, I was able to sleep shortly after my experience, even though the trip started around 3 pm.
This rediscovery revealed a new dimension to the substance. At doses of around 100 micrograms, LSD not only uncovers intricate connections but also nurtures a profoundly introspective state, inviting a deeper exploration of the self. This aspect sets it apart from other psychedelics.
My journey with LSD at these doses unfolds with little visual distractions, allowing for a profound internal dialogue in a muted external environment. In these moments, ambient music becomes a guiding force for my meditative state. Emotionally, LSD instils a sense of lucidity, cutting through the fog of everyday thought. There’s a palpable ‘go-getter’ attitude, a valuable tool when navigating complex emotions and past traumas.
