The benefits of Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises
Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE) stem from the understanding that traumatic experiences can lead to chronic tension and anxiety, often stored within the body. This approach is unique in that it targets the physical manifestations of trauma, distinguishing it from more cognitive or talk-based therapies.
Originating from the work of Dr David Berceli, TRE are designed to activate a natural reflex mechanism of shaking or vibrating. This, in turn, facilitates the release of muscular tension and promotes a state of calm within the nervous system.
This process mirrors the instinctual tremors observed in animals following distressing events, such as the sight of a deer trembling after narrowly escaping a predator or a dog shaking off fear after a thunderstorm. These natural reactions underscore the universality of this phenomenon, highlighting the shared evolutionary roots of our innate capacity for recovery and resilience.
Typically, TRE involve a cycle of tensing and relaxing specific muscle groups, with a primary focus on the pelvis and legs. This deliberate approach elicits a tremoring response. The simplicity and accessibility of TRE make it a versatile tool, easily adaptable to various contexts and complementing other therapeutic modalities.
Combining TRE with psychedelics #
Embarking on TRE as a natural extension of my yoga practice, I quickly discovered its complementary potential when paired with deep relaxation techniques. However, it was during an MDMA session that the idea of combining TRE with psychedelics was born.
Faced with a compulsion to move, I realised that standing or dancing might interfere with my ability to process my thoughts effectively. At that moment, I made the intriguing decision to merge TRE with the psychedelic experience. Memories and emotions that were once locked within my body found release through the rhythmic tremors induced by TRE. This allowed me to process and release pent-up emotions, contributing to a sense of lightness and emotional clarity.
Recognising the importance of using MDMA sparingly, I’ve since found that low-dose LSD, with its ability to induce introspective states, works in much the same way when combined with TRE for therapeutic purposes.
The synergy between TRE and psychedelics is nothing short of profound. In this unique combination, TRE become an embodiment of emotional liberation, enabling the shedding of emotional baggage and ushering in sensations of liberation and lightness. Furthermore, they alleviate the physical sensations (such as tension and vibrations) that can accompany psychedelic experiences. This ensures a more focused, grounded, and impactful journey.
This unconventional approach requires occasional breaks. Performing TRE on a yoga mat can place strain on the pelvis and lower back, especially during intense or prolonged shaking episodes. Taking breaks as required not only ensures physical comfort but also allows for the management of the sometimes-overwhelming nature of the emotional release facilitated by the combination of TRE and psychedelics. These pauses provide moments for grounding and reflection, contributing to a smoother and more mindful healing journey.
