A manifesto for mindful exploration with psychotropics
Within Sam Harris’s Waking Up lies a profound realisation: ’everything we do is for the purpose of altering consciousness’. This insight points to the fundamental human drive to explore the depths of our consciousness.
Throughout history, humanity’s exploration of consciousness has invariably led us to the discovery and use of psychoactive substances or psychotropics. These substances span a diverse array of natural and synthetic compounds with anxiolytic, depressing, empathogenic, hallucinogenic, or stimulating effects. Examples include widely used substances like caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco, alongside herbal remedies, over-the-counter and prescription medications, and other substances often categorised as illicit. While these substances vary in legality and social acceptance, they all share the ability to alter perception, mood, or consciousness.
I believe in the potential for psychotropics to contribute to personal growth, self-discovery, and spiritual exploration. This manifesto is my commitment to myself and others.
Intentional use #
- I choose to use psychoactive substances consciously and with clear intentions.
- I embrace self-reflection and adapt my approach to psychotropics as my circumstances change.
- I set boundaries for my use of these substances, prioritising my overall well-being and a healthy lifestyle.
Informed decision-making #
- I educate myself about a wide range of psychoactive substances, understanding their effects, risks, and benefits to make informed, deliberate choices.
- I seek a balanced approach in consuming psychotropics, aiming to maximise benefits while minimising risks.
- I uphold the principle that every individual has the right to make informed decisions about their consumption of these substances.
Responsibility and accountability #
- I demonstrate responsible behaviour when using psychoactive substances, acknowledging that my actions can influence social dynamics and the well-being of others.
- I monitor my physical and mental health when using psychotropics, seeking help if dependency or addiction signs emerge.
- I respect individual responses to these substances and recognise that social, cultural, and legal contexts significantly influence their use and effects.
Fostering supportive environments #
- I advocate for safe, judgment-free spaces where individuals can explore psychoactive substances responsibly.
- I support open discussions around psychotropics to foster a collective understanding and responsible approach to these substances.
- I endorse legal reforms that support scientific research, medicinal applications, and responsible recreational use of these substances.
