Microdosing psychedelics
Microdosing with psychedelics has emerged as a modern frontier in the quest for enhanced productivity and personal well-being. Unlike traditional psychedelic experiences characterised by intense visual alterations and profound shifts in consciousness, microdosing aims to provide the benefits of psychedelics in a subtler, more controlled manner.
Substances, dosages, and schedules #
Microdosing involves the consumption of minute quantities of psychedelic substances, a fraction of the amount required to induce a full psychedelic experience. LSD and psilocybin, the active compound in Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms, are the most commonly microdosed substances. The rationale behind microdosing is to reap the cognitive and emotional benefits of psychedelics (such as enhanced creativity, increased focus, and improved mood), without significant alterations in perception or the onset of hallucinations.
The typical dosage for a microdose is approximately one-tenth of the threshold dose: around ten micrograms for LSD (often necessitating volumetric dosing) and one milligram for psilocybin, equating to roughly 100 milligrams of dried Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms. Psilocybin is sometimes used in conjunction with other functional mushrooms. A notable combination is the ‘Stamets stack’, named after mycologist Paul Stamets, which combines Psilocybe cubensis with lion’s mane mushroom (Hericium erinaceus) and niacin.
The regimen for microdosing varies, but a common schedule is dosing once, followed by two days off. This pattern is designed to prevent the rapid development of tolerance — a known issue with consistent psychedelic use — ensuring that the effects of microdosing remain consistent over time.
Personal experiences #
From a personal standpoint, both substances retain their `character’ even at microdoses.
Microdosing LSD is characterised by a notable buzz, enhancing problem-solving abilities and the capacity to discern connections between seemingly unrelated concepts. This differs from other stimulants like modafinil, which, while effective, don’t seem to offer the same depth of cognitive enhancement.
In contrast, microdosing psilocybin tends to induce a more tranquil state, providing a sense of relaxation that is almost sedative. This makes it an ideal companion to a morning cup of coffee, balancing the stimulating effects of caffeine with the grounding, calming influence of psilocybin.
Microdosing versus higher doses #
While the subtleties and benefits of microdosing, particularly with LSD, are appreciable, it’s not a practice I engage in regularly.
For purposes of healing and profound introspection, I find that higher doses, ranging from the threshold to significantly larger quantities, offer a more impactful and insightful experience. Such sessions, although shorter, are often more intense and yield profound revelations that can be processed and integrated in the subsequent days or weeks. The ritualistic aspect of preparing for a higher-dose psychedelic experience also holds its appeal, marking a clear distinction from the routine nature of microdosing.
For those currently microdosing and considering a transition to higher doses, a hiatus of one or two weeks is advisable. This ensures that any tolerance developed during microdosing is adequately reset, allowing for the full impact of the psychedelic experience to manifest.
